Persuasion

“One man’s ways may be as good as another’s, but we all like our own best.” – Jane Austen

Why I’m Reading this Book?

I’ve read Jane Austen earlier and I liked those stories because of the simplicity of them and for their feminist point of view. This book is one of the classics and final finished work by the authoress. It’s also one of the book from the list “BBC believes you’ve only read 6 of these books”. One of my reading goal is to finish this list too. I stand at 46 out of 100.

My Review…

Jane Austen’s characters are usually flat. If somebody is good, there is no bad trait in them, if anyone is bad, they are extremely wicked. This story is also like that but amusing nevertheless.

Like in her book ‘Emma’, there are people here who influence a person’s life decisions, sometimes altering their course of life for worse. Our heroine here is victim of such circumstances. Anne gets influenced by her Aunt, in her decision of accepting Captain Wentworth as her life partner. Rationale? The age old reason of a person’s finance and his social upstanding. Although Anne doesn’t think like that, but she is young, naive and ‘persuadable’. Going against her instincts, she says no.

Real story starts after 8 years, now Anne is mature, she realizes what she did was maybe wrong. But like a sensible person, she accepts her fate and tries to move on with her life, until she met Mr. Wentworth again.

What would be her decision now. Does she still love him? If so, are the feelings mutual? Would there be more objections? Will she be persuaded again? These are the questions, whose answers are explored through this story.

My Rating – 3

On the scale of: (1- Hate , 2- Neither like nor dislike, 3- Like, 4- Love, 5- Gaga)

Why anyone else should read this Book?

One should read this book if they love Jane Austen or if they like short books. Even though story and characters are predictable, it feels good to see growth of Anne. There are some funny characters as well you can laugh about.

Story comes to a full circle and things fall in place at right time and everything is hunky dory in the end. Usually life is not like that. But if you are looking for a light feel good read, go for this book.
